CHAPTER 3
Find a
page where the text bumps up against the left edge. Is it appealing? What would you do to make the page more appealing and
the text easier to read?
http://www.members.tripod.com/ectoolbox/6th_social_studies.htm
I
would create a frame or text box with margins so that the text would be bumping up against the left edge of the screen.
Find a
page with an unacceptable background. What is your immediate impression when you come across a page like that?
https://members.tripod.com/mather/middle.html
I
noticed the orange colored background and the yellow text were both warm colors. This
did not create good contrast between the two. It would have been better if the
background was a cool color and the text being warm.
Find a
page that has an icon for a missing graphic. Why might the graphic be missing?
https://members.tripod.com/exworthy/mathhi.htm
In
place of the missing graphic, this webpage doesn’t substitute an icon for it.
Instead the graphic area is a blank box with the text stating ‘AG00021_.gif’ My guess why an icon is used
or a name of a file is substituted in the place of a missing graphic is because the creator could not find a suitable graphic
to use and had to use an icon as a temporary substitute or the graphic file name that is being referenced had been changed
and the webpage is pointing to an invalid file name.
Look for
this address: www.wolphincorn.com. Did you get a message? Why did you get that message?
Yes,
I got a pop-up window that stated the following.
“SYSTEM
STATUS: Your Urgent Attention is Required!”
“You
have been chosen to receive a FREE*laptop PC. This exclusive offer is only available
online.”
“To
claim your FREE*laptop PC, click Next below.”
“Hurry
before time runs out!”
I
got this message because it was either an advertisement pop-up window or a social engineering trick to lure me into installing
Trojan horse, virus, spyware or malware onto my computer. Any big ticket item
like a laptop that is free is usually too good to be true.
Find a
table with the borders showing.
http://cms.fhsdschools.org/agunnell/OprahHonorsHome/HonorsProcess/tabid/14577/Default.aspx
www.yahoo.com
Find a
page where it is obvious the designer used tables, even though the borders are not showing. How can you tell?
http://www.flickr.com/
http://wordpress.com/
http://www.dailymotion.com/us
I
can tell because there are three obvious columns but no border lines separating them.
Find a
page or two where the designer probably should have used tables. How would tables have made it a better page?
http://webquest.sdsu.edu/about_webquests.html
The
thinking skills list is done without a table even though the author attempted to create a table by pressing the space bar
to create tables without borders. The text is not completely aligned and is difficult
to follow. A table would help align the text and make it easier for my eyes to
read.
Find several
email links. Do you find any email links that you don’t know are for email until you click them or check their address
in the status bar?
http://www.conservativeusa.org/megalink.htm
Yes,
the email links in this great website doesn’t indicate whether they are for email.
The only indication is that the subtitle states “no email.” By
looking at the status bar at the bottom of my browser as I pass my cursor over the link, the email address appears.
Find several
pages with anchors (links that jump you to somewhere else on the same page, instead of to another page).
http://cte.jhu.edu/techacademy/fellows/MENTZER/webquest/austan.htm#intro
http://www.spa3.k12.sc.us/WebQuests/space/index.htm#Introduction
http://www.yorkville.k12.il.us/webquests/webqwilliams/webqtwilliams.html
http://www.macomb.k12.mi.us/wq/WebQ97/COLAMER2.HTM
Find at
least two external links and two internal links. How can you tell whether they are external (remote) or internal (local)?
http://www.webquest.org/questgarden/lessons/33642-061112110414/index.htm
The
links on the left hand column of the webpage is for navigating within the website. They
are internal links because they are the table of content for a webquest. The
links within each webpage are external links because they link to a website outside of the webquest.
Find a
page with several frames. Spend some time there and poke around. Notice how frames are not like tables! What do you think?

CHAPTER 4
Find
a page with an inappropriate title, such
as “index.htm” or “hexidec.html.” What do you know how to do that the person who created that web
page doesn’t (or just overlooked)?
I
could not find a page with an inappropriate title such as “index.htm” or “hexidec.html.” I am sure they exist, but I’ve searched many websites and they seemed to be properly titled. If there were web pages that were inappropriately titled, that would indicate that
the person who created the web page accidentally gave the title the same name as the html name since the html name is what
is being saved. It’s very easy to get the title and the html name confused
as they are not the same thing.
Find a
page that has an icon indicating a missing graphic.
Look carefully
at a few web addresses. Can you visualize the file structure now? That is, can you tell which folders are inside of which
folders, and which file is the actual name of the web page you see?
Yes,
it is easy to visualize the file structure of a website. I can see folders within
folders and am able to identify the actual name of the web page as each webpage has its own unique name.
When you
come across business sites, take note of their domain names. Do you find a business that does not own its own domain name
(such as hometown.aol.com/CatfoodCompany)? What kind of impression does that give you?
Yes, there are many small online businesses at
Yahoo shopping that has the word ‘Yahoo’ embedded in the address. An
example would be stores with addresses such as
http://mkates.stores.yahoo.net/
http://yhst-84877481603783.stores.yahoo.net/
http://yhst-91841320050386.stores.yahoo.net/
